Cibola Fishing Report – January 28–February 2

Body

GRANTS, N.M. Fishing across Cibola County stayed in its winter pattern during the Jan. 28–Feb. 2 period: fewer angler reports coming in, steady interest from local anglers, and continued reminders that cold-weather conditions can change access at Bluewater quickly.

Bluewater Lake

Bluewater Lake State Park did not receive a new fishing report during this window. The most recent fishing update remains the Jan. 15 report, which stated trout fishing was FAIR to GOOD when using cheese PowerBait.

The biggest ongoing update for the public continues to be access and safety. State Parks has posted that Bluewater Lake is temporarily CLOSED TO BOATING due to extreme temperatures causing ice to form around the main boat ramp, and visitors are asked to refrain from going out onto the lake at this time.

New Mexico State Parks’ most recent posted lake conditions update (last updated Jan. 26, 2026) lists boating conditions as closed, with the reservoir at an elevation of 7,368.520 feet (MSL) and an estimated volume of 4,422 acre-feet. USGS provisional reservoir storage data later showed Bluewater at 4,422 acrefeet on Feb. 2, 2026, compared with 4,445 acre-feet on Jan. 26. In practical terms, the two sources are telling a consistent story: the lake is drifting downward modestly week to week, and the more immediate impact right now is the ice-related boating closure. (USGS values are provisional and timestamped, while State Parks postings reflect conditions at the time of the park update.)

Bluewater Lake State Park remains on winter entrance hours through March 31, with the gate open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shower facility remains temporarily closed due to lack of heat, with that notice posted through April 1. Fireworks are prohibited within the park, wood gathering for campfires is prohibited within state park boundaries, and OHVs/ATVs/dirt bikes are not allowed within park boundaries.

For current conditions, visitors can check the Bluewater Lake State Park webpage or call 505876-2391. Camping reservations are available through Reserve America at 877-664-7787.

Grants Riverwalk Pond There were no angler updates and no new stocking reports for the Grants Municipal Pond (Riverwalk Pond) during the Jan. 28–Feb. 2 period.
