The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors met in regular session on Thursday, June 1 in the NMAA Hall of Pride and Honor.
The Board of Directors elected Mr. Anthony Casados as President and Mr. Martin Madrid as Vice President for a two-year term.
Executive Director Sally Marquez gave her Director's Report which included information on the spring championship season, participation data collected by the NMAA, the July high school awards banquet hosted by various NM associations, and Board Meeting dates for the 2023-2024 school year.
Business Manager Shari Kessler-Schwaner presented the NMAA Financial Report which included information pertaining to all championships from 2023-2024 and ticket sales data from those events.
Ms. Marquez discussed the 2023-2024 NMAA Budget with the Board of Directors. The Board voted to approve the budget as presented.
Assistant Director Tammy Richards presented the NMAAActivities Report which included information pertaining to participation numbers, state activity events, powerlifting, and the NMAA Foundation.
Commissioner of Officials Zac Stevenson the New Mexico Officials Association Report which included information regarding shot clock data collected during state basketball, a new rule change from the NFHS in basketball, current online educational programs/curriculums being used within highs schools, an update on DragonFly software initiatives, and fall sports scheduling meetings between assignors and schools.
Ms. Luckie Daniels, parent, and Ms. Ann Stewart, athletic director, of Los Alamos addressed the Board with a complaint and concerns regarding inaccuracies with times/distances in the sport of track & field.
Associate Director Dusty Young presented a discussion item pertaining to summer activity guidelines in the sport of football.
Ms. Marquez presented six discussion items which included information regarding the state’s new CPR/AED requirement for coaches, classification & alignment for 2024-2026, middle school membership, bylaws violations by coaches, weekday meets in track & field, and hardship/bullying eligibility guidelines.
The Board of Directors took action on the following items.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to update sportsmanship bylaws that would add specific sanctions for egregious acts of unsportsmanlike conduct by spectators/teams.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to adjust bylaws pertaining to amateurism and name/image/likeness.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to limit the use of telescopic poles/cameras at NMAA sanctioned events.
-Voted to table a proposal that would adjust appeal process bylaws.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to amend 8th grade participation attendance zone bylaws.
The next NMAA Board of Directors’ meeting is scheduled for September 20, 2023.
