United Building Momentum as Midseason Form Begins to Take Shape

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a difficult start to the 2026 campaign, New Mexico United appears to be finding its footing as the season moves deeper into spring, combining improved defensive play with late-match resilience that has become a hallmark of the club in recent years.

The latest example came Saturday night at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park, where United defeated Eastern Conference side Charleston Battery 1–0 in front of more than 8,000 supporters. The result marked New Mexico’s first victory over Charleston since 2022 and continued a stretch of improved performances at home.

Defender Kipp Keller delivered the decisive moment late in the match, striking from outside the 18-yard box to give the Black & Yellow all three points.

“This is my home,” Keller said after the match. “If you play for the name at the front of the shirt, fans will hopefully remember the back.”

The match itself reflected the physical, back-and-forth style often associated with USL Championship play. Both teams created early chances, with United nearly taking the lead in the first half when Dayonn Harris slipped behind the Battery defense, only to see his shot drift just wide.

Charleston continued to pressure in the second half, but United’s defense held firm. Chris Gloster delivered one of the key plays of the night with a crucial block inside the penalty area that prevented what appeared to be a likely goal.

As the match entered its final stages, Keller’s long-range strike broke the deadlock and capped another strong defensive performance from a United side that has steadily shown improvement after a rocky opening month.

A Season Beginning to Stabilize

The victory over Charleston continues a broader trend for New Mexico United after an uneven start to the year.

United opened the 2026 season with road losses against Oakland Roots SC and San Antonio FC before earning a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Colorado Springs in the home opener. Since then, the club has balanced league play with appearances in both the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the USL Jägermeister Cup.

While United’s Open Cup run ended in a loss to El Paso Locomotive FC, the team has shown increasing cohesion as offseason additions settle into the squad.

Veteran signings such as Tyler Blackett, former Manchester United defender, and Finnish international Niko Hämäläinen have added experience to the back line, while players like Cam Wilkerson and Justin Rennicks have provided energy and depth.

The return of key contributors including Greg Hurst, Valentin Noël, Chris Gloster, Zico Bailey, Marlon Vargas, and Dayonn Harris has also helped stabilize the roster after several offseason departures following last year’s Western Conference Final run.

Head Coach Dennis Sanchez has repeatedly emphasized patience and consistency throughout the early season, pointing to the importance of chemistry and rhythm as the team integrates new players.

That growth has started to become visible, particularly at home, where United continues to feed off one of the strongest fan atmospheres in the USL Championship.

Academy Program Showing Growth

The organization’s academy system has also produced encouraging results this spring.

Earlier this month, New Mexico United Academy earned a 2–2 draw against Stars FC in Bernalillo in a performance highlighted by a remarkable long-range goal from Kyle Hofmann and another strike from Leonel Bencomo.

The academy side controlled much of that match statistically, outshooting Stars FC 15–5 while holding 61 percent possession and not allowing an open-play goal.

As the professional team works through the demands of the USL Championship season, the academy program continues developing local talent and expanding the club’s long-term soccer pipeline in New Mexico.

New Mexico United now heads back on the road for another interconference matchup, traveling east to face Hartford Athletic on Saturday at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.

The Western Conference remains tightly contested early in the season, meaning every point earned in May could carry significant weight later in the year.
