School Absenteeism Dear Editor, “Our Doors are always open” In response to the article in the “citizen” about absenteeism and low-test scores in the Grants Cibola County District, the answer is obvious “you can not teach an empty seat.” The meaning of this article is self-explanatory.

Travels in Grants

It has taken me a long time to write this--ever since I read the summarized Legislative report about Cibola schools. Only 17 percent of our children are proficient in math and 27 percent in reading. There was increasing violence in spite of more money given to the schools.

“You know, since I’ve been eating these chia seeds, I’ve noticed my beard has gotten heavier.” My husband, Peter, was talking to my father downstairs. I sat up at attention. This comment about the chia seeds was news to me.

“They put in a new sidewalk,” my neighbor said, “and the first thing that happened was, a cat walked across the cement and left little footprints!” My neighbor was amused. “I hope they leave them. They’re so cute!” I thought those prints would probably survive.

Hello Cibola community! It is so nice to write to you again. Since we last “spoke,” I have spent most of my time at New Mexico State University- Main Campus in Las Cruces, pursuing a major in Communication, a minor in Journalism, and a second minor in Social Media Management.

Child maltreatment rates in New Mexico are among the highest in the nation. (Approximately 15 in every 1000 children under the age of 18 have been victims of abuse) With these numbers in mind, my office is initiating the first Annual Southwest Crimes Against Children Conference in New Mexico.

Yesterday wasn’t the best day. I don’t like to complain and, the truth is, I have very little to complain about. Still, yesterday was not the best day. I woke with a stomachache. I’d gone to bed with a stomachache, and this is not terribly unusual.
