GRANTS, N.M. - Vanessa Chavez was recently appointed as the new city manager of Grants, New Mexico. The city council approved the appointment, which followed removal of the previous city manager, Laura Jaramillo.

Mayor Martin “Modey” Hicks appointed Chavez at an April 12 regular meeting, giving the council roughly two weeks to interview Chavez, check with her references, et cetera. Mayor Hicks was very enthusiastic about the appointment that was approved by a 3-2 vote, which required the mayor’s vote to break a tie, at the April 26 regular meeting. Now, both the council and Chavez are ready for her to get started.

Chavez has lived in Ci bola County for eight years.

“I'm a proud native New Mexican,” said the new manager, who attended Western New Mexico University, Silver City, in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Education, as well as Southwestern College, pursuing studies to become a licensed Counselor. She served in public education in New Mexico for a total of 25 years, according to the new manager.

Some of Chavez’ hobbies include horseback riding, golfing, hiking, and gardening.

Referring to her new role, Chavez believes she will bring something unique to the table.

“I am a consensus builder and I know how to create high performing teams,” explained Chavez, who added, “Grants is my home. I will do what I can to make to our community even better. I will oversee the work of the various de partments and I'll be representing Grants while working with neighboring jurisdictions and state entities.”

Chavez commented that she is excited about taking on this new position, excited for what the future brings, and excited to work together with everyone in taking Grants in the direction it needs to go.
