During the move from California to Indiana, the Huckeby family stopped in San Rafael, New Mexico in Cibola County to check out a problem with their truck. Their beautiful shepherd, Sky, somehow got out of the vehicle and disappeared into the desert. It was dark, but the family searched for their beloved dog, cruising through the small town and calling out to her. Heartbroken, they finally decided to resume their cross-country journey.
On January 23, Pete Lucero, the Animal Control Officer for Cibola County, was called out to a church in San Rafael by a woman who said she spotted a black shepherd. Lucero captured the dog that had a loose muzzle around its neck and immediately transported her to the Grant’s Animal Care Center where it was determined she was microchipped. Center Director, Dale Kuehnert, posted her picture and information on the center’s Facebook page. Miranda Huckeby, now in Indiana, saw the posting and sent a note via Facebook that read: “That’s our dog!”
Ms. Huckeby said that Sky is a constant companion to her eight-year-old son, Merrick, who has severe autism and has had Sky in his life for four years. A family friend in Austin, Texas drove to N.M. to retrieve Sky and bring her to her new home in Indiana.
Sky was last spotted at 304 Santa Fe Ave. in Grants, NM standing on a table at Jennie’s Pet Grooming (owned by Norene Canada) and being lovingly groomed by Sandy Miles. She’s ready to return home. Her beautiful eyes and thankful dog smile say it all.
In an update on Facebook, the City of Grants Animal Care Center posted, “As you may know, Sky left on her approximately 1300-mile journey yesterday evening to Indiana. Stay up to date with Sky and Merrick page, [https://www.facebook.co m/profile.php?id=1000896685 46111] … We are beyond happy that we played a small part of this amazing journey to reunite a family.”
