Crownpoint, NM – Navajo Technical University is thrilled to announce that the eagerly anticipated final examinations for the talented students of the NTU Culinary Arts program were successfully held from April 30 to May 2, 2024. During this exciting event, our dedicated culinary students showcased their skills by meticulously preparing and serving a delightful six-course meal for esteemed guests at the NTU's Main campus hospitality center.

The talented culinary students who took part in the examination on the inaugural day were TJ, Isaiah, and Keany. They each demonstrated the impressive skills they had acquired during the program: the standout dishes featured smoked salmon, fried deviled eggs, and delectable desserts. Furthermore, the students passionately shared the origins of the desserts and engaged in thoughtful discussions about their impeccable service during the meal.

After finishing his final, Isaiah shared his experience: “It was pretty rough, but I got through it. It's a learning experience if you want to be in the kitchen; it's up to you to take it on.” Isaiah then reflected on his struggle with the main entree: “You've got to be on time, that's why it’s good to learn now, the time management, and that’s what I need to practice more going forward.”

The exciting second day of the final examinations for the NTU Culinary Arts program began with the talented students - Raquel, Shanti, and Brendon - having the fantastic opportunity to showcase their culinary skills by preparing six-course meals using the provided ingredients. A distinguished panel of judges, which includes NTU faculty, staff, and students' relatives, have been invited to evaluate the competition. The students diligently prepared their ingredients the day before while the first group completed their final dishes. The chef instructors have provided valuable advice to the remaining students, encouraging them to approach their finals confidently, attentively, and thoroughly prepare for their upcoming presentation of their exceptional dishes.

Brendon and his cooking partner demonstrated great teamwork as they impressed the judges at their table with the consistent quality of their meals. Reflecting on today's experience, Brendon said, “I initially felt overwhelmed when I entered the kitchen, but I gained confidence as the day went on. It was challenging, but I managed to pull through. I anticipated the challenges, and once I got started, I could stay organized and manage my time effectively. Overall, this experience has been a perfect way to learn and grow in my cooking career.”

The guests were delighted with their meals and raved about the student chefs' culinary creations. Standout dishes such as the butternut squash soup, roasted duck, and tableside dessert garnered high praise. Shanti and Requel showcased impressive culinary skills, leaving a lasting impression on their guests. Even during peak hours, the students demonstrated exceptional professionalism, ensuring their teams remained focused and efficient in the bustling kitchen environment.

The NTU Culinary Arts program has completed its spring semester examinations with Lanaya and Eracheyo, the final two students. They have skillfully crafted their exquisite six-course meals using the ingredients they carefully selected from last week's mystery box.

Lanaya and Eracheyo eagerly observed their classmates, who completed the finals in the past two days, to gain valuable insights into their study methods and time management for meal preparation. Despite encountering challenges, the two students remained steadfast, drawing upon their lessons to conquer obstacles with determination and resilience.

During the final examinations, all students felt pressured, especially those on the third day. Eracheyo commented, 'It was stressful, but I found it enjoyable. There's still a lot I need to learn from today.' Lanaya added, 'My experience today was stressful and pressurizing, and I was a bit out of it. But overall, it went well. Working with my partner was a positive experience, and I learned communication skills I hadn't learned before. I started to learn and get used to the pressure.'

Eight talented students have completed the challenging culinary finals, showcasing their resilience and dedication. Each student overcame unique obstacles and gained valuable insights from their culinary experiences. The sixcourse meal, an integral part of the program's curriculum, demonstrates the high standards set for our culinary students. Let's join together to celebrate their remarkable achievement!
