The Winter Quadrathlon Entity Meeting took place Wednesday, February 8 at the Coyote del Malpais Golf Course in Grants. The meeting covered traffic control and was headed by Race Director Isaac Atencio and Assistant Race Director Kendra Brown.

On Saturday, February 18, the Winter Quad will begin at 8 am at 515 High Street (the old County Complex Building). Mass start will begin at 8 am so the race course will need to be cleared by 7:45 am. High Street will be closed from Iron Avenue to First Street. A Sheriff Patrol unit will lead the racers to the end of the pavement where bikers will transition to running. Another Sheriff Patrol Unit will follow the last racer to the shooting range. All riders must follow the rules of the road as they race.

Regular traffic will be stopped at the end of the pavement entering the forest. Only pass-holders will be able to drive beyond the pavement. It was also advised bikers should go the speed limit on the return trip. “Some of these bikes can easily reach 5060 mph coming down” a committee member stated.

Medical logistics will go up the day before for a safety meeting. The biggest problems are dehydration, rolled ankles, and hyperthermia. Also talked about was the evacuation plan if the need arises, the Heli-spot for dire emergency needs. Poles and markers are placed to ensure safety and the use of the backup trail approved by the Forest Service in case of low amounts of snow on the regular trail.

The point was stressed no unauthorized vehicles will be allowed allowed beyond the La Mosca turn-off.

The Kids Quad will be from 8:45 am-12 pm starting at 515 High Street. Grants Mayor Erik Garcia will be overseeing the Kids Quad this year. Mayor Garcia leads several youth group activities in the city and county. When asked about the difficulty of this event he stated it is the most difficult of its type. The raid gains of elevation make it extremely challenging.

There are 120 kids participating this year and 229 participants.

174 from New Mexico 23 from Colorado 7 from Arizona 4 from Texas 3 from California 1 from Canada 1 from Austria And single racers from other locations.
