We were “On the Road Again” this past Easter weekend on Saturday after 52 weeks of social distancing and missing last year’s cruise due to the COVID pandemic.

Seven “car fools,” some with co-pilots, and waxed cars that have been sitting for perhaps a year or more assembled in social distance style at the Fire and Ice Park, here in Grants, masked up and ready to enjoy the warm spring weather and take a cruise.

The event started with pictures at the Fire and Ice drive-thru arch, then handouts of cruise directions and score cards to record the results of their dice toss at each of seven stops where one would try and spell “I’m…a…car…f… o…o…l, from script on the dices faces. First toss was at the Fire and Ice Park.

The drivers then cruised their polished cars to San Rafael to toss dice again in the park across the beautiful church, then to Milan Village Hall for a group picture with the Carrot Harvest mural in the background.

On to the village of San Mateo we went; convertible cars had tops down and the riders were enjoying the spring air at a cruise speed of about 50 mph. Through the beautiful village and a stop with the uranium mine headframe in the background, then back towards Grants with the fifth stop and toss of the dice at the Jay’s Bar’s parking lot.

We enjoyed a slow cruise back to the Fire and Ice Park for the final toss and tally, and to determine the best poker hand from each car’s selected five VIN numbers that would finish the games. Prizes this year were compliments of O’Reilly Auto Parts as well as Grants Main Street Project, and Grants/Cibola County Chamber of Commerce.

Some of our cruisers then went to the Coyote del Malpais Golf Course on the east side of Grants for a delicious lunch on the rear patio, seated at social-distanced tables while overlooking the greening grass that was topped by many golfers also enjoying the beautiful weather.

Hope to do it again on the first Saturday in April next year for the 6th annual “All Fools Day Car Cruise ”…yup…

…”Fools and Cars!”
