Thousands across the Americas were treated to a spectacular annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023. This rare event occurs when the Moon, at its farthest point from Earth, passes in front of the Sun, leaving a blazing 'ring of fire' in the sky.
Three events were held across Cibola to view the eclipse, Grants MainStreet Project Inc. held an event at Fire and Ice Park in the heart of Grants, New Mexico; The City of Grants held a viewing party at Coyote Del Malpais Golf Course; the Village of Milan held a viewing part at Kearns Park.
The event began with a partial eclipse, followed by the Moon fully covering the Sun, creating the 'ring of fire' effect. This annular phase lasted one to five minutes. Subsequently, a partial eclipse reemerged before the Moon's final departure.
While not as dramatic as a total solar eclipse, this event provided a captivating celestial display, with animals reacting to the sudden dimming of the sky. As the eclipse concluded, it left a lasting impression of the beauty of our cosmic surroundings, inspiring many to await the next celestial show.
GMS would like to thank the Grants Farmer’s Market for sharing the space at Fire and Ice Park.
