C25K coming to NMSU-Grants

It’s springtime. Or at least that’s the rumor. And after our long, cold winter, and even longer spell cooped up and separated from one another during the pandemic, it’s time to get moving again. And socializing! For these reasons and plenty more, NMSU-Grants invites the community to join in a free 9-week Couch to 5K program at noon on Tuesdays, starting March 28.

Christy Lochrie, Adult Education Program Manager, NMSU-Grants, will lead the lunchtime run series.

This program will follow the popular C25K plan created by Josh Clark in the 1990s. It begins gradually and slowly, in an effort to prevent injury and build both stamina and confidence. The first workout, for example, starts with a brisk 5minute walk and then alternates between 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes. By week 9, participants should be able to run 5K, which pencils to 3.1 miles. Walkers are also welcome.

While we’ll meet once per week on Tuesdays, participants should also plan to work out on their own at least two other days during the week. And if you can corral a C25K partner for those other days, all the better.

For the uninitiated runners among us, take heart: I hadn’t run either until about 5 years ago. With the company of a few friends, I followed a similar plan when I lived in Busan, South Korea. Before that, I always insisted I’d only run if zombies were on the loose. Imagine my surprise to discover I can now outrun those shuffling zombies should they ever turn up.

And if you’re worried that you’re too slow, or too out of shape or, or, or, remember this: Anyone who’s out moving is lapping everyone who’s still on the couch. I’m a slow runner. That’s perfectly fine by me.

If you’d like to join in our lunchtime C25K runs, please join us starting Tuesday, March 28 at noon in front of Martinez Hall at NMSU-Grants.
