GRANTS, N.M. — The Cibola County Health Council invites community members to attend “Uranium Impacts: Past, Present, and Future — A Public Health Learning Session,” a free Zoom webinar on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 10 a.m. Mountain Time.

The session will feature Ava Curtis, Environmental Justice Coordinator for the Multicultural Alliance for a Safe Environment, and Chris Shuey, Senior Environmental Health Specialist at Southwest Research and Information Center.

The webinar will explore the legacy of uranium mining in New Mexico, perspectives from impacted communities, research on uranium exposure and health, and public health considerations surrounding proposed mining activities. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

The Health Council organized the session in response to members’ interest in learning more about uranium mining’s health impacts. The event offers residents, health professionals, community organizations, and local leaders an opportunity to hear from presenters with experience in community advocacy and environmental health research.

Curtis works with a grassroots coalition of uranium-impacted communities across New Mexico. She connects frontline communities with technical experts and decision-makers to help communities access resources and advocate for themselves.

Shuey has more than 45 years of experience working with Indigenous communities on the impacts of uranium mining and processing. He directs Southwest Research and Information Center’s Uranium Impact Assessment Program and leads the Community Engagement Core for the UNM METALS Superfund Research Center. His work includes collaboration with communities and University of New Mexico researchers on uranium exposure studies on the Navajo Nation and at the Pueblo of Laguna.

The webinar is free and open to the public. To attend, register at:
