GRANTS, N.M. – The City of Grants Planning and Zoning Commission approved nine of the 10 applications listed on the Jan. 13 agenda. Code Enforcer Robert Windhorst declined to comment on the Dani’s Daycare, item A. He explained that the owner has withdrawn her conditional-use application.

The five-member commission spent almost an hour discussing the Chaco Avenue homebased business at the Dec. 9 meeting. See the Dec. 16, 2020 edition of the Cibola Citizen.

Commission Chair Jamie Holton stated that she lives on the same street, Chaco Avenue, and has noticed an increase in traffic at that location.

“I wonder if it [Dani’s] is still in operation?” speculated Chair Holton.

The commission unanimously approved applications by two daycare businesses, Guardian Angel’s Daycare, 416 Jensen St., and Karen’s Kids Daycare, 1217 Seville Loop.

Only one business owner, Henry Lackey, 1634 E. Old Highway 66, was present at last week’s meeting. He explained that the Junkyard Brewery has been in operation for four and a half years. Breweries can sell their products to other breweries, but the state requires a conditional use permit for wholesale operations. That type of permit will allow him to sell beer and wine to storefronts such as Allsup’s and Handy Andy’s said Lackey.

Windhorst noted the area is zoned general commercial. His office sent 13 letters to nearby residents and received no objections; code enforcement staff recommended approval of the wholesale liquor license application. The members voted unanimously to approve the permit.

The code enforcer described each the nine conditional-use applications, identified the number of letters sent to neighbors, and recommended approval of each homebased business permit. None of the nearby neighbors responded with objections to any of the applications.

Technical difficulties

City officials have provided public access to P&Z meetings via Facebook since the onset of the pandemic. Last week’s meeting post was incomplete; the audio portion began with item B, number six, and visual coverage began in the middle item C, the presentation for a wholesale liquor license conditional-use permit.

More than 425 people have viewed the meeting on Facebook in the past five days.
