The United States Senate confirmed Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States with a 52 to 48 vote.
Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Marg Elliston released the following statement regarding the confirmation:
“While millions of Americans continue to wait for a second COVID-19 relief package, Donald Trump and Republican leaders in the Senate have focused on forcing a partisan vote to ram through this confirmation. This hypocritical attempt to strip Americans of our healthcare clearly shows where the GOP’s priorities lie. Now more than ever, it is critical that we elect Democrats up and-down the ballot, including in our state courts, where we can ensure New Mexicans’ rights are protected. While Republicans in the US Senate made this decision for us, we get to choose our own Supreme Court Justices in New Mexico – and we can choose leaders like Justice Shannon Bacon and Justice David Thomson.”
