GRANTS, N.M. – At the Regular School Board Meeting on December 6, Superintendent Max Perez gave a recap on 24/7, a program presented before the Board in a previous meeting to change the current policies on smoking and vape products in district schools. This change would ban the use and distribution of these products at all times on all of the district's school property. The Board members and Superintendent were all supplied with a guide to reference in the change of their current policies at the last meeting. Superintendent Perez stated that more information about possible changes will be looked at in the next meeting.

The next presentation before the Board was about the Mid-Year Progress Report on the Strategic Plan. On January 4, there will be a mid-year leadership summit where all of the directors, coordinators, and principals will gather to go through all the critical actions in the strategic plan, decide where they are as a district, and pinpoint what they still need to get done. It was stated that everything that needs attention will be seen. It was also stated that by the board meeting after next, they should have a summary of all of the items on their strategic plan and where they currently are with them. The end of this presentation was followed by a brief presentation on the current budget for each school in the district.

Next on the Agenda was an action item. This was a consideration for approval for an Early College High School student to graduate early. The student was Morgan Merayo. She went before the Board and presented her reasons for the request. She had been taking two to three extra classes during the summer, along with extra classes during the regular semesters in order to graduate early due to the program. According to Merayo, the next semester will give her five credits, which will push her over the amount needed to graduate with her High School Diploma as well as her Associates Degree in Science. She said that her career path is nursing and started in science in order to quickly achieve her BSN. She said she is currently one class away from her certification in phlebotomy.

The motion to allow her to graduate early was fully approved by the School Board.
