CIBOLA COUNTY, NM – Poll workers, who start their day at the crack of dawn and remain until the late hours, are not just employees; they are the backbone of the voting process, assisting voters with ballots and guiding them through the voting machines.
The motivation behind becoming a poll worker extends beyond the financial incentive. According to Dominguez, many poll workers are driven by their passion for the democratic process and the satisfaction derived from assisting fellow citizens in exercising their voting rights. 'It's not just about showing up on Election Day. We have a process from beginning to end, and our poll workers are a part of this process,' Dominguez said, emphasizing the comprehensive training provided to ensure they are well-prepared.
In an effort to attract and retain these vital contributors, Cibola County has increased the compensation for poll workers, from the previous cap of $200 to a more substantial $300 to $400, including training. This adjustment aims to acknowledge the commitment of poll workers and make the positions more appealing.
Cibola County, which now operates 15 Voting Convenience Centers (VCCs), requires a dedicated team at each location, including a presiding judge, two election judges, an election clerk, and in certain areas, an interpreter. The introduction of VCCs has revolutionized the voting experience in the county, allowing residents to vote at any center rather than being restricted to a designated polling station.
Dominguez explained this shift has significantly enhanced accessibility and convenience for voters.
The county clerk's office is actively seeking people interested in becoming poll workers. Potential candidates must be registered voters in Cibola County; 17-year-olds are eligible to participate with parent and school permission. Dominguez said this initiative not only supports the electoral process but also engages younger community members in democracy.
Dominguez also took the moment to urge the community to participate in upcoming elections. 'Just go out and vote. Make your voice heard,' she encouraged, explaining the importance of that every vote has in shaping the future of the county.
