GRANTS, NM--The results are in for the Best Small Town in the West. Grants, New Mexico was voted the third best small town after number one, Seward, Alaska and second, Solvang, California.

Congratulations Grants people. Number three out of ten states nominated in the entire western section of the United States is pretty good! We all know that Cibola County has a lot to offer tourists and people who are just passing through on their ways to numbers one and two.

So, what exactly is here that keeps us happy and attracts visitors? Our multi-cultural community offers us an opportunity to meet people of other cultures and enjoy a variety of cuisines.

Our many activities are attractive to the health conscious, families who like to play together, and those who like to socialize. Now that summer is approaching, we can expect to see the bikers and hikers heading west along historic Route 66. They can set up camp, ride bicycles, hike local trails and visit Mount Taylor. There are scenic locations just right for a picnic, and in the winter they can enjoy snowshoeing, to name just a few attractions.

Locals of all ages also have fun with our Mount Taylor Quadrathlon. Nearby pueblos, Acoma and Laguna, offer culture and education as well as the Tour de Acoma cycle race. Let’s not forget the Ice Caves, Wolf Sanctuary, and El Morro. And this is a short list.

Speaking with Chamber of Commerce Director, Don Jaramillo, his next step in promoting Grants’ tourism is to make sure we let everyone know that Grants ranks third Best Small Town in the West.

“I'm a long time local born and raised here and I think this is the greatest place,” said the Director, “I mean we do have our challenges, when it’s dry, we sometimes have fires, but 10 minutes this way you're on top of Mount Taylor, 20 minutes away there’s Bluewater Canyon. So, I mean we just live in such a great area, with so much opportunity.”

We all agree with Jaramillo, and that’s how we made it to third place. Next time we’ll be first.
