Grants MainStreet Design Committee Seeks Committee Members for Beautification Projects

Body

From carrots in Milan to stone etchings in El Morro, petroglyphs and pottery shards to The Mother Road and railroads, the Grants MainStreet Design Committee is on a mission to both commemorate the region’s heritage and beautify the Main Street district around Santa Fe Avenue in Grants. We’re also looking for at least four dedicated committee members who would like to be involved in the creation of at least two mural projects this year and more design projects going forward.

No mural painting or experience is required.

Previous MainStreet Design projects include Riverwalk Park, the amphitheater, median beautification along Santa Fe Avenue and the caboose project, among others.

This year, the Design Committee is tasked with the implementation of two murals in the Main Street district: One to commemorate the region’s heritage and another that will be a photo opportunity for both area residents and tourists – think angel wings or the like.

The committee will be tasked with evaluating proposals from both artists and building owners in the Main Street district.

As a collaborative project, both MainStreet and property owners will pay an equal amount for the installation of a mural project. Artists can expect to earn about $1,000 per mural. Supplies, including paint, will be provided for the selected artists.

With an ambitious agenda ahead, the design committee will meet monthly, beginning on Tuesday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m. at The Mission Gallery, located at 422 Santa Fe Ave., Grants. While we’ll roll up sleeves to get started, these meetings won’t be stuffy or formal affairs: Committee members are encouraged to bring along food and beverages to share while we work. For my part, I’ll make a veggie Thai Massaman Curry for the upcoming meeting.

If you’d like to join the Grants MainStreet Design Committee, please contact Christy Lochrie at (505) 900-8652 or email at christy.lochrie@gmail.com.

If you’re a building owner interested in a mural project, or if you’re an artist who would like to propose a mural project, please contact Will Yarborough at (505) 658-2450 or at grantsmainstreet66@ gmail.com.

We hope to have mural projects underway by September of this year.
