MILAN, N.M. – The Milan Fire Department consists of two stations. One on each side of the train tracks in order to follow National Fire Protection Association code. This is to ensure that in an emergency, and in the event of railroad interference fire personnel can always be reached.

In the Milan Fire Department, Chief Daniel Urioste and Assistant Chief Michael Rivera are the only full-time firefighters. Other than them, the department relies on a volunteer-based workforce in order to keep the community safe. Volunteer service has slowed down in recent years. Recruitment and retention have been the department’s primary goal for the past two years, and they recently recruited two new members to the staff, bringing the total to eleven. Assistant Chief Rivera mentioned that 25 volunteers is probably the most he’s ever seen in the department.

Chief Urioste has high hopes for the future of the Milan Fire Department, stating, “I really would like to see this to be a 24/7 fully staffed station.” For now, though, their staff is strictly volunteer.

The department gets their supplies, and offers free training for volunteer firefighters through its fire protection funds and grants. Those who join MFD will have access to in-house training and be sent to the Fire Academy to be certified in essential skills for the job. The station also fundraises to supplement its budget when resources are available.

The station at 801 Motel Drive is currently undergoing a remodel on the bottom floor of the building. If the station can secure grant money, Chief Urioste may begin phase-two of their remodel plan and begin work on the second floor as well. These remodels are being done for administrative purposes. People interested in helping their community and gaining experience by volunteering can contact the department at 505-287-7366 or at milanfiredept@villageofmilan. com.
