GRANTS, N.M. – A tense situation unfolded at 1109 Houston Ave. in Grants when authorities were dispatched to a residence, responding to reports of a possible altercation involving a mother and her daughter. Grants Police Department arrested Shelmarie Grieve after the incident occurred.

An unnamed caller informed the Cibola Regional Dispatch that the two women were fighting with a knife.

Officers approached the house and cleared a car parked in the driveway. Officers knocked on the door and a male resident, answered. The officer asked the man about the whereabouts of the two other individuals in the house and the presence of any weapons. The man told officers that the two women who were fighting had gone into another room and denied the presence of any other weapons in the residence. He also disclosed that the knife involved in the incident was in his room.

Entering the house, officers proceeded down the hallway and discovered two females, Grieve and her daughter, the victim, who were both visibly upset, according to the arrest report. Both females were found crying, prompting the officer to question the nature of the situation. The daughter, sitting on the opposite side of the room, initially claimed that nothing was wrong. The officer then asked Grieve to follow them out of the room to ensure their separation.

In the living room, an officer conducted a pat-down search of Grieve, confirming she did not have any potential weapons. Afterward, officers escorted Grieve to their police vehicle, allowing them time to speak with the daughter.

Returning to the house, the officers approached the daughter, who, according to the arrest report, was emotionally distressed. She told officers about heated argument she had with her mother, Grieve, during which she had been scratched and had a glass cup thrown at her. The daughter explained that she sustained injuries to her arm while attempting to restrain Grieve, who had wielded a chef's knife in a threatening manner. Additionally, she reported being struck on the head with a glass cup, which left a noticeable knot on her left temple.

The man who answered the door was questioned about the events, revealing that he initially witnessed his mother going through the knife block in the living room, an action he perceived as potentially intimidating. He recounted returning to the living room and finding both his mother and sister on the floor. He stated that he witnessed his mother making a stabbing motion in the air, at which point he allegedly intervened and grabbed her wrist, causing her to drop the knife.

The officer then asked the man about the knife's location. The man directed the officer to his room, where a knife block was found on a bedside table. Dixon identified the specific knife involved as one with a black and yellow handle. The officer seized the knife as evidence.

With evidence secured and an account from everyone involved, officers read Miranda rights to Grieve, who expressed willingness to cooperate. Grieve admitted to engaging in a heated argument with her daughter, during which she allegedly became angered and threw a glass of soda at her. Greve told officers that that she had allegedly wielded the knife, explaining that she had been waving it around and admitted to pointing it towards her daughter.

Grieve was placed in handcuffs and taken to Cibola General Hospital for a medical clearance before being transported to the Grants Police Department for booking. Later, she was transferred to Core Civic in Milan for incarceration.
