MILAN, N.M. – On December 11, the Village of Milan Police Department responded to a call of a shooter with a shotgun at Escondido trailer park in Milan, New Mexico. MPD received assistance from the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police to apprehend the shooter. There were no reported injuries but there was damage to households and motor vehicles. MPD arrested Kyle Tsosie, booked him at the Cibola County Correctional Center in Milan, N.M.; this incident remains under investigation.

In the afternoon of Dec. 11 an altercation occurred at a gathering in the Escondido trailer park in Milan. During the course of this altercation, Tsosie allegedly left the gathering to step inside his home and grab a firearm. Allegedly, he stepped outside of his house and began firing the weapon.

According to MPD, alcohol does appear to have been a factor in this incident.

The firearm was first called into MPD as a shotgun, but when MPD arrived on scene, they discovered that it was actually a semi-automatic handgun. CCSO, NMSP, and MPD surrounded the Tsosie residence, calling out for the occupants to come out. Tsosie was arrested without incident and charged with Negligent Use of a Firearm; Shooting at a Dwelling; and two counts of Criminal Damage to Property.

Several homes were struck by gunfire, but no residents inside were physically harmed. Several vehicles sustained damage but were not struck by bullets.

According to Milan Police Department’s Sergeant Joe Galindo, this operation was successful thanks to the cooperation between agencies. By multiplying their numbers, Sgt. Galindo said, the team was able to protect not only the law enforcement on the ground, but the other residents in the trailer park.

Sgt. Galindo said an investigation into this incident is ongoing. He thanked the community for their watchful eyes and said that community support helps keep the village safe.
