SANTA FE, NM — Today at the agency’s weekly Open Meeting, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) discussed dockets which were opened last summer and fall regarding potential issues with the reliability of electric service in New Mexico for 2022 and 2023. The Commission has been proactively monitoring this issue in order to provide assistance and direction to New Mexico’s i nvestor-owned utilities, and PRC took action today to consolidate those dockets to ensure a concentrated focus on finding solutions to resource concerns. At the meeting, Commissioners emphasized the importance of utility companies and government officials working together to “roll up our sleeves” and find both short-term and long-term solutions to preserve New Mexico’s commitment to the Energy Transition Act, in particular, and to keeping the lights on for all New Mexicans.

Commissioner Fischmann requested, “I ask that everyone keep a totally open mind, be creative and consider all potential possibilities. Don’t just fall back on old habits and normal operating procedures because coming into summer we’re not facing normal operating environment.”

Commissioner Theresa Becenti-Aguilar of District Four, the elected member who represents Cibola County on the PRC, pointed to the bottom line, “We need to have the power on for 2022 and 2023. And it is our job to make the best decision for the consumers.”

“Now is not the time to go backwards on the commitment to a clean and reliable energy future, but a time to come together and renew that commitment and do so together. The people we serve deserve that from all of us,” Commission Chair Joseph Maestas stated.

The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) regulates the utilities, telecommunications, and motor carrier industries to ensure fair and reasonable rates, and to assure reasonable and adequate services to the public as provided by law. The NMPRC also promotes public safety through the offices of Pipeline Safety Bureau and the Transportation Division.
