GRANTS, NM - According to The Pampered Pup, a website centered around creating entertaining and informative articles about dogs, dog food, and dog supplies, New Mexicans have asked about and voted upon which dog breed has the potential to be their official state dog breed.

The Pampered Pup recently held statewide polls and seemingly found that the majority of Americans favored dog breeds that held significant historical ties to their respective states. Officially, only 13 states currently have a state dog breed. This poll was conducted nationwide with 3000 Americans, and for those states that already have an official breed, they were simply asked what breed they might pick as an alternative. According to Zach Lovatt of The Pampered Pup, 'Each choice tells a story of the state, its history, its culture, and its people. We believe every dog breed has a unique charm and character that aligns with the diverse American spirit.”

For New Mexico, the top choice in dog breed was the Xoloitzcuintli. (show-loweats- queent-ly) This breed is more commonly known as the Mexican Hairless Dog.

The Pampered Pup stated that, 'The Mexican Hairless Dog, or Xoloitzcuintli, was the top choice for New Mexicans, due to its deep historical ties with the region and its cultural significance. Pre-dating even the Mayans and Aztecs, the Xoloitzcuintli is considered one of the world's oldest and rarest dog breeds, native to Mexico, but also with a rich history in the broader Southwestern U.S. region. Furthermore, the Xoloitzcuintli's adaptability to desert climates, similar to New Mexico's, showcases the breed's resilience and compatibility with the local environment.' The second-place dog breed for New Mexico was the Chihuahua and third place was the Jack Russell Terrier.
