MILAN, NM - The Milan Police Department is doing well. The department has been getting steady calls, some new equipment has been purchased, a new lieutenant was recently hired, and the Chief of Police Carl Ustupski recently attended training in California that was a part of a threephase program.

The police department hired a new lieutenant. Lieutenant Berrios, who has 15 years of experience working with law enforcement joined the force on May 3, coming from the Albuquerque Police Department. The department is also still looking to hire a new police officer, to fill a vacant position, as well as a detective.

Ustupski spoke about the calls that the department has responded to, “We always get similar calls to Grants, but just not as frequent. We’re smaller, the community is a little bit different, not as many businesses.” Some of the calls include: removal of snake, shoplifting, traffic accidents, trespassing, and domestic violence. Ustupski is also very big on transparency he stated, “Look I’m never going to try and hide anything, If I do something or my department messes up we’re going to find out why and let people know.”

Ustupski also used the law enforcement protection fund to purchase pants, boots, handcuffs, flashlights, equipment for their rifles, and hand-held radars. The department also purchased five patrol shields, which will be beneficial in situations on calls with suspected weapons, barricaded subjects, and active shooters. Ustupski stated, “Just a little bit of added protection for our officers.” They will be updating their badges to ones that are black and blue that will be issued soon. The whole county is also working on putting in place a new reporting system.

Ustupski spoke about the training he underwent in Sacramento, California, “They brought in impaired individuals that they could run the test on and I just observed, but it was interesting. Everyone that we dealt with was high on meth and fentanyl, so an interesting combination.” Ustupski said overall going through the training in Sacramento was “a good time.” He stated, “I can’t complain, I really enjoy that stuff.”
