For the record, in the December 13 edition of the Cibola Citizen, in the story “The Upcoming 2024 Election Year in Cibola County” there were two misstatements. There were changes made to the Grants City Charter which effected the way elections are to be ran in the City of Grants.

The city of Grants will not have any city council candidates up for election in November 2024.

• Per Ordinance No. 23-1274, the city has opted-in to the Regular Local Election, which allows the County to hold the Grants city elections in November 2025, starting with the District 1 and District 3 Council seats. All of the City Council terms were extended for an additional year. This amendment was passed in June 2023 by the Grants City Council.

Councilor Fred Rodarte will be eligible to run for another term, as the city removed term limits in 2020.

• The City does have a term limit provision (2.02 (D)) which was challenged by former Magistrate Judge Larson. On January 6, 2020, the Grants City Council passed Ordinance No. 19-1240 which nullified this section of the charter.
