ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Whenever a New Mexican is elevated to a high national position, you want to congratulate him or her, but when Presidentelect Biden today picked Representative Deb Haaland as Interior Secretary, it’s hard to see a bright spot for our state because of her extreme position on energy. Biden’s pick confirms that he plans to systematically take apart our important oil and gas industry.

“Rep. Haaland has constantly voiced her opposition to fracking on federal lands,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “With her as Secretary, she will destroy New Mexico’s vital energy industry. Oil and gas are New Mexico’s bread and butter, providing billions in revenue, more than 40 percent of our state’s budget and more than 100,000 jobs. This doesn’t bode well for the energy industry.”

Haaland has proven she supports the Green New Deal and opposes fracking, positions that will demolish one of New Mexico’s most critical industries. Haaland’s progressive agenda would make her the most radical left Interior Secretary in the nation’s history.

Haaland will eagerly follow Biden’s leftist agenda that includes a ban on fracking and stopping federal oil and gas leasing and permitting. If he continues this path, he will virtually ruin our nation’s proud energy industry, according to RPNM officials.
