GRANTS, N.M. – The Grants Police Department is seeking public assistance to identify a serial tire slasher on North Sage Street in Grants, New Mexico. The Cibola Citizen has received multiple phone calls over the last two weeks alleging that personal vehicles have had tires slashed on N. Sage St., Grants Police Department is aware of the situation and is working to discover the culprit.

Stopping crime before it occurs has been part of Interim Police Chief Jeff Marez’ plan for GPD. This has included crime suppression efforts like increasing police visibility, and improving officer presence at the local elementary schools. Not all crime can be detected or stopped before it occurs however, and some of the best tools police officers have to solve crimes after they’ve been committed come from the community – security video footage, eyewitness statements, and other citizen record keeping.

Marez said that the department is hitting obstacles in this investigation because no witnesses or people with security footage have come forward. Marez encourages anyone with information about the slashings to call 505-287-2984, or dial 911 if they witness a tire slashing.

Slashing another person’s vehicle’s tire is a criminal offense, a person found to be slashing tires can be charged with Criminal Damage to Property.

Marez explained that residents of Grants can help protect themselves with cameras, or other types of detection devices. Grants Police Department will continue to investigate these incidents of tire slashing.
