GRANTS, N.M. – According to superintendent Max Perez, on August 2, Aleisha Lundstrom resigned her position on the board of education in a public meeting in order to prevent a conflict of interest in the program she is going to work in under the district. This has left an opening that the Board has 45 days from the opening of the position to fill. In order for a person to be eligible to join the school board, they must live in the district with the opening, be a citizen that is able to vote, and have no felonies. There are no education requirements for the position. You must be able to commit to responsibilities and duties as well as keep up to date with current events. The community's voice is a large part of the direction that board members will make decisions in.

The new member will then be trained after being hired. There are various types of training involved including local training with presenters, statewide training, regional training, and annual training. The board president is usually instrumental in choosing what the topics are. The application timeline was between August 2 through August 16. The review for candidates was August 17 and 18. Notification of eligibility was on August 19 and the community forum took place on August 23. A decision must be made before September 16 at the 45-day mark. The responsibilities of a school board member involve listening and speaking to the community as well as making decisions based on their views. Budgeting, policy making, and choosing the leader of the school system are also part of their duties.
