MILAN, N.M. – Milan officials announced last week that some employees may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Officials posted on social media, “The Village of Milan Village Hall will be closed until further notice due to a potential exposure. This is only a precautionary measure. At this time, NO one in the Village Hall has tested positive for COVID-19. However, we are still taking precautions to keep all staff and community members safe,” said the Sept. 24 Facebook post, which also appeared on the village website.

“When we are all in the clear we will post an update on this page on our website.”

Village Manager Sarah Austin said that on Wednesday officials held a mandatory meeting for all employees of the eight departments. Staff were split into small groups. The result was that people who may have been exposed were tested Thursday morning.

Those who had been in contact with potentially exposed employees were sent home. This included staff from the village hall, the Rockin’ 66 Transit manager, two public works employees and members of the fire department. The manager said those who were tested on Thursday expected to receive results on Monday, Sept. 28.

Austin acknowledged that Milan has 48 employees plus 10 people who volunteer with the Milan Fire Department. Seven employees work at the village hall.

“We have asked Grants Fire [Department] to handle our calls and they have agreed to which we are very thankful for,” said Manager Austin on Sept. 25.

She confirmed that the employees who had been potentially exposed to the coronavirus received their results on Sept. 27 and all were tests were negative.

Village hall employees resumed regular duties on Monday, but the building remains closed to the public.

“We are still following the Governor’s orders on social distancing,” said Manager Austin, “so we are not able to open our doors at this time, but appointments are being accepted by phone.”
