Woman Apprehended in Connection to Stolen Vehicle Incident at Walmart

GRANTS, NM – Officers with the Grants Police Department responded to a report of a stolen motor vehicle on January 9, 2024. Officers were able to recover the vehicle and arrested Rebecca Macias The incident was reported to Cibola Regional Communications, the victim who called 911 informed authorities that a vehicle he regularly used had been stolen from his grandfather's residence.

Upon reaching the location at 820 Ross Street, GPD did not immediately make contact with anyone at the residence. Instead, he requested Cibola Regional Dispatch to establish contact with victim. Dispatch relayed that victim had contacted them and informed them that he had located the stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Walmart, near the CMV parking area.

Responding promptly to the new information, officers proceeded to Walmart, where they met with the victim, who pointed out the white vehicle in question. The victim told officers that his mother was in the area, prompting GPD to speak with her.

Upon making contact with the victim’s mother, she provided a description of a female who had exited the stolen vehicle's passenger side. The mother described the female as having light skin, black curly hair, and facial acne, wearing grey sweatpants and a black jacket. According to the mother, the female entered Walmart briefly, left with two teddy bears and a blue Walmart shopping basket, and then met a male individual at a street corner before departing for the Phillips 66 gas station.

GPD promptly relayed the description and potential whereabouts of the female to other units in the vicinity. Simultaneously, officers headed to Ed Corley Ford to assist in filing a Stolen Vehicle Affidavit and collecting their signature on said Affidavit.

In response to the situation's gravity, officers requested the assistance of detectives to conduct DNA swabs on the stolen vehicle. Detectives carried out the necessary procedures, which included collecting elimination DNA swabs from the victim. Upon confirmation that it belonged to them; the vehicle was returned to the victim family.

Afterward, officers and detectives reviewed surveillance footage from Walmart to gather more evidence. The video footage depicted the white vehicle entering the parking lot, a female matching the mother's description exiting the vehicle, and her subsequent entry into the store. As the investigation unfolded, GPD lieutenants contacted responding officers, informing them that they had located a female fitting the description.

While continuing to analyze the video, officers received updates through radio communications. GPD had successfully apprehended the female, identified as Rebecca Macias.

The video further corroborated the sequence of events described by the victim family, showing Macias leaving individual, consistent with Montoya's account.

Upon returning to GPD, officers initiated the necessary paperwork and had Macias transported to Core Civic.
