Recent rainfall created hazardous driving conditions from the metropolitan areas to the rural portions of the county, and while many experienced flooding over the past week and a half, no place was more adversely affected than the small village of Moquino. The county commission came together in an emergency meeting on June 27 to address the disaster and begin work to fix the problem.

After experiencing the single driest May in the history of drought tracking, Cibola County is receiving an abundance of rain. The threat of fire danger has shutdown the Cibola National Forest, but the forest is now reopening. The rains appear to bring a relief to the drought, but are creating headaches for the county government after washing away a bridge – the only access in and out of the rural village of Moquino. The county is taking emergency steps to help support the people of Moquino, at an estimated cost of at least $500,000.

GRANTS, N.M. – A house fire on the east side from Santa Fe Avenue, across the street from Canton Café in Grants, New Mexico, was stopped by firefighting teams who quickly responded and cut the flames down before the house before the building was completely destroyed by the fire.
