BLUEWATER LAKE, N.M. – Bluewater Lake was packed this weekend, with lots of people, lots of campers and many visitors staying through Monday to enjoy time on the water. The lake continues to be a major summer gathering place for Cibola County and surrounding communities, but the most common observation from lakegoers was also hard to miss Bluewater is looking low.
Bluewater Lake
At Bluewater Lake State Park, campers and visitors reported a beautiful weekend at the lake, even as many commented on the low water level. Several lakegoers described the condition of the lake as “pitiful” compared with what they remember from higher-water years. That local observation lines up with the numbers we have been tracking through this report since winter and spring.
Fishing reports were still positive. State Parks reported that fishing for trout and tiger muskie was FAIR to GOOD when using PowerBait.
There was no stocking report this week in Cibola County waters. For current conditions, anglers can visit Bluewater Lake Park’s webpage or call 505-876-2391.
New Mexico State Parks’ most recent posted lake conditions update, last updated June 8, 2026, listed boating conditions as GOOD, with the reservoir at 7,366.000 feet (MSL), a surface area of 359 acres and an estimated volume of 3,596 acre-feet. USGS provisional elevation readings show Bluewater at 7,366.03 feet on June 16 and 7,365.78 feet on June 23, a drop of 0.25 feet over the week. In practical terms, the lake continues its gradual early-summer decline, and regular visitors are noticing that change along the shoreline.
Visitors should also remember that Stage II fire restrictions remain in effect at Bluewater Lake Park. Under those restrictions, visitors may not build or use fires, campfires, charcoal, coal, or wood stoves, including in developed campgrounds or picnic areas. Restrictions also apply to fireworks, smoking, certain equipment use, openflame work and off-road vehicle use. Wood gathering is prohibited within state park boundaries, and OHVs, ATVs and dirt bikes are not allowed in the park. State Parks continue to remind visitors to wear life jackets when in or around the water.
Bluewater Lake also has an EV charging station, and seasonal hours are in effect. From April 1 through Oct. 30, the park’s posted hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations are available through Reserve America at 877-664-7787.
Grants Riverwalk Pond
There were no fishing reports from the Grants Riverwalk Pond during the June 16–22 reporting period. The pond remains a convenient in-town option for families and young anglers, especially as summer routines settle in.
