No catches reported as Bluewater advisories and low water levels continue
BLUEWATER LAKE, N.M. — The final week of August closed quietly for Cibola County fishing, with no new catch reports from Bluewater Lake or the Grants Riverwalk Pond.
The slowdown may reflect a combination of the school year getting fully underway, late-summer fishing patterns and the continuing blue-green algae notice at Bluewater. Even in a quiet week, lake conditions continue to change, public notices remain in place and visitors should check current information before heading out.
Bluewater Lake
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish reported that it received no fishing reports for Bluewater Lake over the past three weeks. No stocking was reported at Bluewater this past week.
New Mexico State Parks continues to post that Bluewater Lake is experiencing a blue-green algae bloom. The notice advises visitors that algae is present in the water and that people should swim or recreate at their own risk. Visitors should avoid water that looks scummy, discolored, thick like paint or has algae collected along the shoreline. Pets should also be kept away from visible algae, and untreated lake water should not be consumed.
A new public notice is also posted on the Bluewater Lake State Park webpage regarding the Bluewater State Park Stone Ridge drinking water system. According to the notice, the system failed to correct certain deficiencies within the required time frame following a New Mexico Environment Department sanitary survey. The notice states the situation was not an emergency and that customers do not need to boil water or take other corrective actions. It also states corrective steps have been taken, including installation of a raw water sample tap, inspection of both storage tanks at Bluewater Stoneridge, and locking of the backwash roof hatch.
New Mexico State Parks’ most recent posted lake conditions, last updated Aug. 17, 2026, listed boating conditions as EXCELLENT, with the reservoir at 7,364.540 feet (MSL), a surface area of 310 acres and an estimated volume of 3,107 acre-feet.
USGS provisional elevation readings show Bluewater at 7,364.52 feet on Aug. 25 and 7,364.44 feet on Sept. 1, a drop of 0.08 feet over the week. The change is small, but it continues the gradual latesummer decline tracked in recent reports.
No closures were posted this week. Stage II fire restrictions remain in effect at Bluewater Lake State Park. Under those restrictions, visitors may not build or use fires, campfires, charcoal, coal or wood stoves, including in developed campgrounds or picnic areas.
From April 1 through Oct. 30, the park’s posted hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations are available through Reserve America at 877-664-7787.

Grants Riverwalk Pond
There were no reported catches at the Grants Riverwalk Pond this week, and no stocking was reported.
The pond remains a convenient in-town option for residents looking for a short fishing trip, walk or evening visit to the Riverwalk area.
