GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants Lady Pirates hosted the Valley Vikings on Saturday, September 19th. And not only was the dress up theme “superheroes,” but the Lady Pirates were also seeking to be heroic themselves.
All three teams played, starting with C-Team, which won its game with a final score of 2-0. Following the C-Team, JV played and went to three sets, winning the last game by a very chaotic two points, for a final score of 2-1.
JV player Melody Mc-Daugale said that her team performs well, but can use some work on some of the little things.
“We performed pretty well against the Vikings on Saturday, but we can work on our communication on and off the court,” McDaugale said. She also talked about her team's overall performance throughout the season so far.
“We help each other out when needed, and are always bringing each other's moods and attitudes up when we are down on ourselves.”
Livii Jaramillo, another JV player, spoke about how her teammates’ communication with each other caused them to start the Valley game a little late.
“It wasn't our best game,” she said. “We had a slow start because of those problems we were having, but once we figured it all out we had a good game.”
After JV played, it was the varsity team’s time for the spotlight.
Before the players even got on the court to warm up, the theme was superheroes, so every girl from every team received a rose to give to a person that was their own personal superhero in their lives. Varsity player Dezrah McNeil picked her mom as her superhero.
“She is my biggest supporter and loves me unconditionally, I could never ask for a better superhero and mom,” McNeil said.
After giving out their roses, Varsity got on the court to warm-up, feeling confident and ready to play.
They lost the first set by two with the score being 2624, then went into the second set ready to put up a fight and win. They went out and lost once again in the second set by another two points with the score being 25-23, and the final set also went to Valley, with the score being 25-18.
Player Harlow Kiyite had a great game in the front row, swinging away and putting up some great defense for her team throughout the game.
McNeil was able to pinpoint what the team could have done better in the game.
“We did well on offense but weren't playing too well defensively,” she said. “We didn't know when to tip or swing.”
McNeil also felt that some very simple things could have helped the Lady Pirates against Valley.
“We could have done better with our energy, and communicated more,” she said. “We could also be better about going for every ball and getting on the ground for the ball if we had to.”
Overall the Varsity team didn't get the outcome they wanted but they put up a fight or it. The next game they have is on Tuesday, September 22, the Varsity girls will be on the road to play Gallup High School for a game that was postponed due to a bomb threat that was made while playing
