MILAN, N.M. — The Village of Milan and Milan Elementary School recently navigated a series of infrastructure challenges following severe weather, resulting in an early dismissal of elementary students.

The sequence of events began on the evening of September 22, when a severe storm accompanied by lightning strikes hit the area. This weather caused a widespread power outages across Milan, affecting numerous residents. In response, Continental Divide Electric Cooperative crews were dispatched to the scene, successfully restoring power within a few hours.

However, when school administrators arrived at Milan Elementary School the following morning, they discovered that a lingering power failure still affected an entire hallway of the building. The situation was further complicated by the village experiencing a lowto- no water pressure community- wide. “Without water, we were unable to prepare hot meals for our students,” Superintendent Widner stated.

Candi Williams, village of Milan manager, explained, “Village crews responded immediately and were able to restore water service to customers and residents within approximately 20 minutes.”

Shortly after power was fully returned to the school campus, a third complication arose. A heating unit located inside a kindergarten classroom suffered a localized short circuit. This malfunction caused a strong electrical odor that spread through the hallways. Prioritizing occupant safety, school officials made the decision to dismiss students early for the day. This early dismissal allowed specialized technicians to thoroughly inspect the electrical system, remove the odor, and ensure the facility was secure.

Widner commended the emergency response, stating, “I am very proud of the Milan Elementary staff and the Milan community for the way they handled a challenging situation and, most importantly, kept our students safe.”

Following the evacuation, Williams explained, “Permanent repairs to the pressurized water line were completed by Village crews on Thursday, September 24.”
