Lady Hawks State Champs!

Body

The only thing better than hitting the $2 billiondollar Powerball lottery is taking a blue trophy in your high school career. The one seeded Lady Hawks of Laguna- Acoma punched that ticket this past Saturday with a 3-0 decisive win over the Texico Wolverines (19-8, 51) in the state championship game at the Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM. The Hawks won their first set and second set by a score of 25-14. The third set tightened up as Texico was not going to lay down dead— however–at the end of the third set, the Hawks setting and kills put that set away by a score of 25-19 despite the Wolverines comeback.

The Hawks line-up included eight seniors, one junior and two sophomores. The seniors were Nikki Cheresposey, Geralynn Day, Halley Kelsey, Natalle Escares, Bethany Mariano, Yazmyn Villegas, Kayli Garcia and Sylvia Gedman. Junior Savannah Sauzo and sophomores Gianna Carillo, Kaylee Lorenzo and Sofia Lazos. The Hawks had a remarkable road to the finish with sweeping defeats of Capitan High School (20-7, 7-1) by a score of 3-0 and Hagerman High School (1711, 6-2) also by a score of 30.

The Hawks finished their season with a remarkable 25-1, 6-0 record. Their only defeat was late in the season by a non-district team, Santa Fe Indian, that series went five sets.

The Cibola Citizen would like to offer a huge congratulations to the Lady Hawks!
