Heat Awareness

Dear editor, It’s hot, hot, hot. So please be extremely careful with flammable materials; cigarettes', matches, charcoal grills, and even your catalectic converter under your vehicle. All are potential sources of ignition during these extreme dry days here in the southwest. Here in Grants, Milan and Cibola County we all need to be vigilant as an errant spark can cause a catastrophe.

Drown all camp fires, flood all charcoal when being disposed of (not in a garbage can), extinguish all smoking material cold to the touch, and create defensible space around your home and out building in case of a wild fire. Ten feet of space with no trees, shrubs, or other vegetation is recommended. Even as many plants and trees look green, they are all a source of ignition during fires in our area. Let's all do the best we can to prevent fires and fire spread in our community.

Sincerely, Robert Hays GFR Chief
