The installation of functioning smoke alarms is the first line of defense in alerting you to the dangers of a fire. According to the NFPA, smoke detectors should be installed: On every level of your home In every bedroom Outside every sleeping area To ensure optimal performance, NFPA recommends installing smoke alarms on the ceiling or high on the wall, no more than 12 inches from the ceiling.

Place them at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances to avoid false alarms.

Avoid installing near windows or air ducts, which can interfere with operation.
