A Future Powered by Purpose

One week ago, the election results delivered a decisive outcome. Donald Trump shall be president once again, and his vision for foreign policy and the future of energy is set to take shape.

Many of us are reflecting on what this means for our future, both as a nation and as a community here in Cibola County. The path forward may not be the one we envisioned, but it remains our path, and our role in shaping the future is more crucial now than ever before.

In this new era, state and local governments will be more critical than ever in ensuring the wellbeing of our citizens. As the national focus shifts, communities like ours must take charge, building local networks of support, economic resilience, and energy security. Grants is a city for a reason, set to be the economic engine for the Cibola County region.

This idea of local control must take center stage for our leaders, as this has the potential to create something lasting and meaningful—especially in the field of energy.

Cibola County is home to the largest naturally occurring store of uranium in the world, an energy source that’s becoming increasingly sought after as countries worldwide rethink their reliance on foreign energy and seek sustainable alternatives. For decades, the United States has relied on imports to power nuclear reactors, but due to recent actions by congress and influence from Trump’s America First agenda, our dependence on foreign uranium is being seen as both costly and geopolitically precarious.

The demand for domestic uranium is growing. Cibola County is uniquely positioned to solve this national issue, and we all stand to benefit from solving this national necessity.

The uranium industry in our county has seen its share of highs and lows. The uranium boom of the 1980s brought prosperity, but the bust that followed left scars—economic and environmental. Today, however, we are witnessing a resurgence in uranium mining across the United States, with production, exploration, and employment in the sector reaching their highest levels in years. The U.S. has already taken steps to cut off uranium imports from Russia, with Congress banning these imports and dedicating billions to rebuilding our domestic nuclear fuel supply chain.

This is a unique opportunity for Cibola County, but it also comes with a responsibility.

We must remember the lessons of our past.

We have seen what happens when resources are extracted irresponsibly, when communities are left to deal with the consequences of hasty decisions. I saw it just this weekend as I drove through Murray Acres – empty plots of land where houses once stood, and families once thrived. A testament to poor environmental stewardship.

This time, we have a chance to do things differently. We can ensure that uranium mining in Cibola County is conducted with the utmost respect for our land, our health, and our future. Responsible stewardship means holding ourselves to high standards, advocating for transparency, and ensuring that the benefits of this resource flow directly to our community.

Uranium is more than just a mineral (I recently read someone calling it a “magic rock” that holds massive amounts of energy); it is a cornerstone of energy independence, a clean alternative to fossil fuels, and a bridge to a future powered by artificial intelligence, robotics, and sustainable technologies. Trump’s Presidential Advisor Elon Musk, among other leaders in the tech and energy sectors, sees the potential for nuclear energy as the backbone of tomorrow’s energy grid. With new innovations like small modular power reactors on the horizon, nuclear energy is not just about traditional power plants—it’s about a future where we power cities, industries, and homes with reliable, carbon-free energy.

To our readers, I say this: Our future does not depend solely on who sits in the Oval Office.

Our future depends on the choices we make, the priorities we set, and the values we uphold here at home. Think about it, Washington D.C. is 1,964 miles from Grants.

Our local leadership, our community spirit, and our commitment to a better tomorrow are the keys to progress. Cibola County has the resources, the resilience, and the people to build a future that honors our past and embraces the Promise of America.

But it will not happen by accident.

Our leaders must be thoughtful, intentional.

The uranium beneath our feet offers us a path to prosperity, but only if we walk it wisely. Together, let’s take that step, not just for ourselves, but to power the generations that will look back and see what we chose to build in these defining times.
