Martha L Chavez

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Martha L Chavez (Nana). She went peacefully with the Lord on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

She was born in Old Town (La Plaza Vieja), on July 29, 1913 to Felix Lucero and Victoria McGuinness.

She was the epitome of strength and fortitude and was a devout Catholic and steadfast in her convictions. She loved to cook, care for her grandchildren/great grandchildren. Nana was an avid reader (especially romance novels), she loved candy, coffee, tea and oyster crackers, to name a few. She also loved watching Mother Angelica and the Lawrence Welk Show.

Nana was a straight shooter, quick witted, sarcastic and gave all of us some of our heartiest laughs. She loved hearing all about what happened at the dances from her daughters and her grandchildren.

She was a good mother, she loved her children, with all her heart. She also loved their spouses just like they were her own. Nana took on everyone's worries as her own and she prayed for all of us fervently.

We will miss you Nana and we will always selfishly believe your time on earth was still not enough.

Nana was preceded in death by parents, Felix Lucero and Victoria McGuinness; husbands, Nash Garcia (First NM State Policeman killed in the line of duty) and Carlos Chavez; daughter, Yvette Jaramillo and husband Marlin Jaramillo; her sister, Marie Dwyer; her brothers, Willie, Bert, Andy and Edwin Lucero; step children, Dori, lsidorita, Sarah, Abbey, Carlos Jr, Benny, Reuben and Dorothy.

Nana is survived by her children, Yvonne Vega, Yolanda and husband Joe Montano, Michael and wife Rita Chavez, Mario and wife Tammy Chavez, Anita Chavez and Rita and husband Angel Gutierrez; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and numerous other family members and dear friends who loved and will miss her greatly.

Services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, located at 1860 Griegos Rd. NW 87107, on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. A Rosary will be recited at 10:30am. The Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am with the burial following at Mt Calvary Cemetery at 12:30. A Reception will then take place back at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall right after the burial. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Officers of the New Mexico State Police.

The family would like to especially thank Ciri, Hospice of New Mexico and First Premier Care Giving for all of the care, kindness and compassion shown to Martha and our family. A special thank you to Magdalene and Amanda and to all who took such great care of Martha. We appreciate you all.
