Stephen A Matthews

Stephen A Matthews, 85 yrs. passed away peacefully Sunday, September 10. Services will be at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Albuquerque this Saturday, October 21, 2023, 11am.

He was a beloved husband, father, uncle, great uncle and businessman/philanthropist. Steve was accomplished as a Chemical Engineer and as Computer Consultant and Founding Partner at Setpoint Inc., honored as an Inc. 500 company in Houston, Texas.

After retiring and moving many times, the couple returned to their favorite homeland in “The Land of Enchantment”, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Steve and Jan were together for over 62 years. They met and married in Albuquerque moving multiple times to Texas, California, Georgia and back to Texas where their daughters Sara and Pam attended grade schools and universities to prepare for careers as professionals.

The couple was supportive in education and created a scholarship fund: The Cibola County Education Foundation, which was created in 1992 to award scholarships to Grants and Laguna Acoma High School students, Native American students, and high school faculty. In 2006, Steve and Jan, both cancer survivors, established: “The Janice Matthews Cancer Research Venture Endowment” to accelerate UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center research. Steve, as a nature lover, will be remembered for bringing family and friends on hikes and journeys to see the wonders of western US and anywhere he found a trail.

Our hope is his story will inspire all to take a nature view and see the creatures around us to protect our environment for all to enjoy.
