The Beast of Bluewater Lake

Bluewater Lake is a pristine fishing spot. Its importance to Cibola’s agriculture is undeniable, and it really is a great place for tourists to visit. During my last visit to the lake, I noticed something jaw dropping: The Beast of Bluewater Lake!

It’s no secret that Bluewater Lake is the best place in New Mexico to catch Tiger Muskie and Rainbow Trout. The secret is the size of these beasts. I have seen some pretty incredible things in my life, but nothing like what I saw on this day.

There was no better time to go fishing, it was a nice spring day and I de cided to go out on a friend’s boat. I cast my line using a minnow lure, dinner was going to be tasty! I had a few bites but I never hooked anything, after a few missed catches my buddy and I decided to change our fishing spot.

We boated closer to the dam wall; the water was a little murkier but I decided to take that as a sign of good luck. The sun was shining, a glitter of light reflected from the calm waves of Bluewater. “What a beautiful lake,” I thought to myself, the warmth of the sun and rocking of the boat could have put me to sleep.

As I stood there, waiting for a catfish or Muskie to bite my line, something bumped the boat. It wasn’t hard enough to send us on a rollercoaster ride, but it was enough to make a noticeable shift in the boat, not to mention the awful knock that came from this thing.

I tried getting a good look at this thing, but the murky and rippling waters disrupted my view.

I figured it must have been nothing, so I cast my line once again and hoped for the best. Bluewater Lake really is a pristine place to rest, adventure, and fish; all the adventure I wanted out of this trip was just to catch a fish.

It was long after this cast that something caught at line. I successfully got this beast on my line, but reeling him was the biggest challenge of my life. I’ve brought in some large fish, in Okla homa I once reeled in a 20-pound Largemouth Bass and it didn’t give me as much trouble. Thankfully my rod is strong, using all my force I pulled up high, and that’s when I saw its shadow in the water.

Just as I began to reel this beast up, my line snapped.

I saw his head and only a sliver of his body. Easily, this Muskie was 60-inches, maybe 27-inches worth of girth. He managed to escape me this time, but I’m going to be spending a lot of time at Bluewater Lake this Summer.

Let’s make it a race, whoever can catch the Beast of Bluewater Lake first gets bragging rights. I’m in it to win, let’s get to Bluewater!
