Sakelares

Dear Editor,

In view of the extensive foundation work necessary to repair Sakalares Boulevard, adding not just one, but three roundabouts there is a waste of time and money.

Related to this is Ms. Elva P-Dominguez’s letter about Leach Avenue (and many others in similar condition). Leach alone has suffered dozens of water and sewer line breaks in the past several years; patchwork is at best what happens to resurface the excavations. The entire town is in need of water and sewer redos, but we don't have the money. So, to have an out-of-town company pitch for three! roundabouts on a thoroughfare that to start, needs thousands of tons of basecourse together with water and sewer lines upgraded, seems quite self-serving. Moreover, 9000+ vehicles per day is not so excessive as to cause traffic jams. We’ve never seen any, except for the 4th of July fireworks display.

In spite of our limited funds, progress has been made on first and third streets, and downtown, among others. Also, I’m grateful for what our repairmen have been doing; it’s dirty work, especially in the cold weather. Sincerely, Joan Sheski

We are Fortunate

Dear editor,

I was glad to see Mr. Windhorst's glowing account of Kate Fletcher. Though I've had several meetings with her in her office, the topic was always about a county issue and her personal life was hardly mentioned.

During those meetings, I learned that the $186,000 we had in the bank when she first took over was the amount of one month's expenditures. Under her guidance, we are now $10 million in the black.

I knew nothing of her illustrious background which Mr. Windhorst describes. She is always self-effacing, with selfdeprecating humor, and with huge appreciation for her staff. She expresses this abundantly to them and to others about them. The atmosphere of her office was relaxed and energetic, with employees popping in and out now and then to ask her a question. Morale seemed high.

Kate has won several awards from the State and she frequently comes up with creative ideas to save us money and to make our lives better. We are mega-fortunate to have her as our county manager. Sincerely, Judith Andreica Grants

Things Must get Better

Dear editor,

It appears our assistant district attorney in Cibola County has a past criminal history, which asks the question is in charge of the recent DWI crash, 2 killed, 2 children critically hurt in crash during Grants police chase. The current elected DA agenda, Agenda | Barbara Romo 4DA (barbararomofordistrictattorn ey.com). When I started police work back in the late 80’s any DWI, or Domestic Violence conviction would have prevented you from law enforcement in NM. Before I retired, they had to drop those rules to the past five years because they could not get enough people to become police officers.

Think they called that defunding police something the Democrats came up with.

I have seen the DA’s Office in Grants in the past refer cases to other offices in Sandoval and Valencia Counties for conflicts of interest. Maybe somebody will ask for that in this case. It's kind of like the current situation with our current and former presidents. If you’re going to indict one, how do you let the other one off for doing the same thing?

They let Hillary off when she broke laws and rules, why not let these two off? Oh, I forgot ones is a Republican and that will not do, the leftwing media supporting the Democrats would have nothing to get their ratings up! Just like the Democratic Congress did not charge Eric Holder held in contempt of Congress after historic vote | Eric Holder | The Guardian, but they got Steve Bannon indicted on contempt of Congress charges | Fox News.

I ran for office last year and came in dead last calling myself a Conservative Democrat since 1983. I came home out of military service that same year a Republican guess it's time to switch back. There’re just not enough conservative Democrats in New Mexico to kick out the old deadwood Democrats no matter how bad they are. We need terms limits badly at the state and federal levels. The current Republican controlled house of representatives is trying to stop insider trading for congressman and their families as well as other issues.

Keep your fingers crossed, things have got to get better, they can’t be any worse than the last two years! Signed, Mr. Harry L. Hall USAF Veteran Retired Police/Sheriff Lt.

Applause to Hard Workers

Dear Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank local community members Robert and Evelyn Siegmann for their dedication and support of the backpack program. Roger and Evelyn spend a significant amount of their personal time organizing and managing the Grants Mainstreet Project’s (GMS) window painting program. This effort raises much needed funding for GMS but also for the Grants-Milan Rotary Club Backpack program. This year they raised over $2,200 which was split between GMS and over $9,000 over the last few years. The Backpack program feeds over 200 children weekly in Cibola County.

As you may know. The Grants-Milan Rotary Club conducts fundraisers all year to support the program and have been able to sustain the program since 2017. To put the $1,100 into perspective we would need to sell 22 teams at $50 each for the bowl-a-thon to would equal that amount. It is significant and we deeply appreciate their support of the backpack program and everything else they do for the community.

Thank you, Evelyn and Roger! JoAnne Martinez President Grants-Milan Rotary Club
