History Museum Update

Dear Editor,

Cibola County Historical Society had a rough April with member illnesses but we are up and running again. We hope to have more regular programs starting with June 17,2023 by Ina Jean Barnes telling us about local homesteaders and culture in the Cibola County area. All our programs are aimed to increase knowledge of our area. As always, the program will be held at the Cibola County History Museum, 525 West High and will begin at 2 PM. Everyone is welcome, no charge and we will have refreshments afterward.

Let’s Ditch Meat This World Environment Day

Dear Editor,

Animal agriculture is a leading contributor to the climate catastrophe, deforestation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. So as World Environment Day (June 5) draws near, let’s go vegan for the well-being of our planet and its inhabitants.

According to a study by experts at the University of Oxford, animal agriculture uses 83% of farmland and contributes over half of all greenhouse gas emissions from farming. And while valuable ecosystems are sacrificed to convert nature into farms, meat and dairy only provide a meager 18% of our calories and 37% of our protein. This is not sustainable.

Approximately 70 billion defenseless animals are bred each year for human consumption. These animals use nearly 16% of the world’s freshwater and a third of global grain production. Therefore, consuming plants directly— rather than cycling them through animals— represents an ethical and sustainable change.

Let’s ditch meat, dairy, and eggs to commemorate World Environment Day. To learn more about the benefits of going vegan and how to get started, explore the information available at PETA.org.

Sincerely, Rebecca Libauskas Climate Research Specialist PETA Foundation

Door to Door

Dear Editor,

The Code Enforcement Office has been receiving a lot of inquiries concerning door to door salespeople. For the safety of the community, the City of Grants requires any business that goes door to door to register their business with the Grants City Clerk. Any salesperson that comes to any door within the City of Grants should have a copy of the business registration from the City.

Given the times we live in, I would counsel all residents to reconsider letting anyone into their home that they don't personally know, especially our elderly residents.

The reason for registering a door to door business is for the safety of our residents. When they are properly registered, we know who they are. With the warm weather upon us, we will see more door to door activity. In dealing with door to door sales, remember the old adage...buyer beware!
