The new norm: Rivers!

I’ve always loved rivers, especially slow and narrow ones that I can try to catch fish from.

I’m by no means an expert on them and one may think I’m all wet with this idea, but here are a few:

First place in my heart is the Pecos River near Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have fished that river for more than 40 years now and just last year our 3-year-old granddaughter Autumn caught her first fish near the Pecos Bridge. She was thrilled and will remember that all her life. My wife Evelyn is from Pecos, N.M.; some of her family still reside there. Makes sense I connect to that river?

Second is the San Juan near Farmington, N.M. We have annually camped at the Cottonwood State Park except this year as all N.M. State Parks were closed due to COVID-19. I have it on my bucket list to fly fish the quality water above the campground someday. I hope to take our granddaughters to do that as well. This time of the year all rivers are decked in fall colors along their banks and they’re beautiful.

Next is the Conejos River in Colorado We have camped near there and fished it a couple times. This river is where our granddaughter Isabella reeled me in so to speak when I teased her early in one day for not catching any fish. She returned later with a fish she caught that was larger than mine. We continue to laugh about it. I really like that river.

Then there is Red River, N.M. We have fished that small river and enjoyed it as well. And what a nice little town.

Rivers are famous in songs and movies. Remember Frank Sinatra and Moon River? Remember John Wayne in Red River, Walter Brennan with Old Rivers and Me?

Billy Joel wrote the song “River of Dreams” in 1993 regarding trust, betrayal and everlasting love. I really like the title as one can use their needs to fill the title. My river of dreams is that all our national and world turbulence will cease and the calm waters would then flow into a lake of world peace.

The most famous river in my mind is the Jordan River, where John the Baptist, knee deep in the cool and calm water, baptized Jesus.

Rivers!
