Praising San Fidel and St. Joseph’s School

Dear Editor:

I really enjoyed Kylie Garcia's article about St. Joseph's School in San Fidel, New Mexico, winning a prestigious science award! I have been to this small school many times and have been very impressed with the scope of learning these children receive. The students from St. Josephs are taught to be polite and inquisitive. This has a lot to do with the community in general, but also the Director of the school, Antonio Trujillo and the fine teachers at St. Josephs.

We had a County Cleanup this past Saturday in this beautiful little vineyard community where there is an Acequia that runs through and is the well spring for all life in San Fidel. On the 15th of every May, there is a blessing by a local Priest on the Acequia and rose petals are sprinkled on the flowing stream. Neighbors from all over come and participate in this blessing by bringing their favorite food dish to share. The people are kind and generous and work very hard to show respect to their ancestors that came before them.

The Cibola County Cleanup was very successful and I wanted to express thanks to the Village Elder, Leon Tafoya and his beautiful wife Beverly, who always work very hard to make these cleanups a success. Marty and Mary Vigil are always great about making the arrangements and scheduling the time for the cleanup. Nathan Naef operated the loader and made it a lot easier for everyone to unload their tires, trash, weeds, junk and rubbish. A big thanks to the many residents that showed up to support this biannual event. Thank you to the NWNWRSWA for providing the roll offs. Clean communities are safer communities. Great things are coming to our County if we do our part to be prepared for them.

Cibola County Commissioner, District 4
