A familiar face is the new head coach of the Lady Pirates softball program. Victor Aldaz, who is currently an assistant boys’ basketball coach and assistant football coach, has filled the vacant head coach position.

Aldaz, a native of Grants, said “The plan for this year is to get them out here and play hard and compete–which they have been.” He continued, “Keeping them positive and going is a big part of my philosophy—clap it up—stay positive and move to the next play.”

When asked where he feels his varsity team is, Aldaz stated, “We are a “JV” team as we only have one senior–-we are fairly young.” Aldaz has goals to “build this program” and develop the players.

Aldaz has some strong players on his squad including Olivia Toivanen, a sophomore, who is the top pitcher for his squad with 38 strikeouts and is currently ranked 10th in the state for strikeouts. Aubrey Garcia,a junior, is leading the state in all classes with stolen bases—19.

Aldaz said, “Our wins to stats don’t mix–we have some good players.” Aldaz believes in time they will turn around. The Lady Pirates have played formidable 5-A opponents including Capital, Santa Fe and Rio Grande. The Lady Pirates, who are currently at 2-10, will play their next game on March 26th at Zuni High School (1-3).
