Basketball District Play Wraps-Up

Cold winds, Valentine’s Day bring us also the close of district basketball play for Cibola County teams.

The Grants High School Boys’ Basketball Team will complete their district play on Tuesday, February 14 in a home game against the Belen Eagles (4-20,1-6), a team that defeated the Pirates by two points in the final seconds of overtime play. The Pirates are eager to play Belen again at home and take a win in this rematch. The Pirates are currently 7-16, 0-7 as they prepare for Belen.

The Lady Pirates are currently 9-15, 1-6 will end their district season with an away game to Belen High School (8-15, 0-6). Both teams will play in the district tournament next week.

Hawks

The Laguna-Acoma girls’ basketball team has a notable record at 17-8, 5-0 and are currently number one in their district (2A-1) just ahead of Dulce High School who is 16-6, 2-1. The Lady Hawks finished their district play on February 10 with a 49-22 defeat of Rehoboth Christian (9-12, 23). The Lady Hawks then defeated 4-A Del Norte High school (6-18, 0-6) on February 13 by a score of 54-40. The Lady Hawks wrap up their district play with a match up against the Dulce Hawks on February, 15, a Wednesday, in an away game.

The Lady Hawks are 11th in the Maxpreps.com state standings and have been ranked in the top ten of the New Mexico Overtime Sports coach’s poll.

The Laguna-Acoma Hawks boys’ team is currently 6-18,1-4 and come off a recent district 58-42 defeat by Rehoboth Christian (14-9, 5-0) on February 10. They will play the Dulce Hawks (12-11, 2-1) on February 15 on the road.

The February 8 edition of the Cibola Citizen, featured a photo of Dominic Valdez, 1, of the GHS boys’ basketball team. His last name was incorrect and the Cibola Citizen would like to apologize for the error.
