After 16 years as an assistant football coach, Grants native Steve Brown has garnered the head coach position of the Grants High School football team.

“I just fell in love with coaching and enjoy working with the youth of our community,” said Brown. “Our goals are not just to win but to ensure that all kids leave as better young adults.”

When asked what his core values and philosophy as a coach are, Brown said, “We want to teach character, integrity and discipline—we want to follow the Angry Jack motto ‘Be the better person today than you were yesterday’ we want to follow that as individuals and as a team.”

Brown expects players to be good students and athletes, “It’s paramount— it’s a two-way street – good quality athletes translate to the classroom.”

Brown wants to build a strong team culture and wants players to want to be there, “No one always wants to lift weights or conditions but you want players to “love the process” and at times you have to be “creative” indicated Brown.

When it comes to practices Brown said, “We will practice twothree hours and depending on the day or the station that we set up we will focus on offense and defense with some days more focus on one or the other as well as special teams and individual development.”

Brown who has been running the summer program for football since May said he is “pleasantly surprised” where the team and is “pleased with the progress” so far.

“Are we where we want to be–of course not—but we are ahead of where we would be.'

Brown would like for the community to know he and his staff are there for the players and their success.

The Pirates have not missed a beat and are headed to a 7-7 scrimmage at Socorro High School later this week.
