Lady Pirates Take Second at RJ

The Lady Pirates rumbled their way to the jungle late last month to, the annual “Rumble in the Jungle” basketball tournament hosted by Aztec High School which took place on December 28-30. The first-round action had the Lady Pirates up against Lady Pirates of Valley High School from Sanders, Arizona. The final score in that game was 54-46. Delany Duran led the Pirate charge with 17 points followed by Raelee Rougemont and Marisa Soto with 14 points apiece. In their second game Pirates played the Lady Cardinals of St. Michaels, Arizona and defeated them by a score of 58-42.

“We played two solid teams that came out and battled us,” said Douglas “Dougie” Hickman, the Lady Pirates head coach. Marissa Soto led the Pirates against the Cougars with 17 points followed by Raelee Rougemont with 16 points.

In the championship game, the Lady Pirates faced a powerful adversary in the Rock Point Cougars from Rock Point, Arizona. The Cougars, who had only lost one game, swept through the tournament and handily defeated the Lady Pirates with a 52-33 and improved their record to 111. “They were a really good team–the tournament MVP was their inside player–Arianne Begay— who could also shoot—it was a tough team,” said Hickman. Ebony Chavez and Raelee Rougemont were named All-Tournament for the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Pirates, who are currently 6-7, will host the Miyamura Patriots (310) on Friday, January 6. “We need to execute our game plan and we should be successful,” said Hickman of the Lady Pirates. Game time will be 7 p.m.

The GHS Boys Basketball team will begin play in the Gallup Tournament on Thursday, January 5. The Pirates who are 6-5 going into the tournament will have their hands full with the 9-1 3-A Eagles of Navajo Prep. Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m.

Cibola County Sports Round-Up

The Lady Hawks of Laguna-Acoma High School are 6-7 after a 4930 loss to Clovis High School (9-13) and will play Tuesday, January 3 away against the 8-4 Lady Dons of Las Vegas High School. The Laguna-Acoma boys basketball team is currently 3-6 after a 83-28 loss to Bel Air, Texas (13-4) on December 28th. Their next game will be on Tuesday, January 3rd at home against Crownpoint High School (7-2).
